Enshrouded’s Sparkworks: When Players Become Dungeon Designers

Sparkworks gives Enshrouded builders new ways to create puzzles and traps. We explore what excites us about the tools and how to protect the worlds players build.

Enshrouded’s next building project could be a dungeon someone else has to survive. With Sparkworks, Keen Games is giving players tools to connect their creations to actions, turning a carefully built space into something people can interact with.

The studio introduced Sparkworks on 8 October, ahead of the 15 October 1.0 release. Levers and pressure plates can trigger outputs such as opening doors or dropping a trap beneath someone’s feet. A corridor can become a puzzle. A bridge can become a very questionable invitation.

At PingCore and PingPlayers, that is the part we are excited to try: building a challenge, watching someone approach it differently, then improving the design. For players planning their own shared world, Enshrouded servers are available on PingPlayers.

Building something worth playing

A beautiful base rewards exploration. An interactive build adds decisions. Which lever opens the exit? What happens when two players step on different plates? Can someone spot the trap before a teammate activates it?

Those are possibilities the new tools invite, rather than a list of finished adventures promised by Keen. Their appeal comes from giving players a system to experiment with and reasons to revisit something they have made.

For studios, that creative freedom presents an interesting opportunity. Players can supply challenges and surprises that extend beyond the developer’s own quests. Whether those creations keep people returning depends on how enjoyable they are to build, play and maintain.

Shared creations need a dependable home

A dungeon takes time to design. Once a group has spent an evening building one, preserving that work becomes part of the experience.

Keen’s dedicated-server documentation distinguishes world progression, which is stored on the server, from character progression, which is stored on players’ machines. Server owners should understand that distinction before deciding what to back up.

Keep recoverable copies of the world and configuration before major updates or substantial building changes. Check the restoration process on a separate copy where possible. A backup becomes useful when you know which files it protects and how to recover them.

Access matters too. Decide who should build, who should explore and how widely to share access. A public invitation needs more thought than an evening with a few trusted players.

Test the adventure with other people

An interactive space deserves a multiplayer test. Invite several players through the route together. Try entering from different directions, activating mechanisms at similar times and leaving before a sequence finishes.

These are sensible checks for shared interactive builds, not reports of faults in Sparkworks. They help builders discover assumptions: a door someone can bypass, a puzzle that becomes confusing in a group, or a route that leaves the last player behind.

Watch server resource use and responsiveness during those sessions. Measure the build you actually run before deciding whether its hosting needs have changed. Player count alone does not describe everything happening in a busy world.

A good reason to return to Embervale

Sparkworks gives Enshrouded’s 1.0 launch a creative appeal alongside its other additions. We are looking forward to seeing what players construct, from elaborate puzzle rooms to traps that are funny precisely once.

For PingCore, the wider lesson is practical: creative freedom works best when players can trust the world holding their work. Hosting, access controls and recoverable saves help protect the time spent making something worth sharing.
